The Rookie

The Rookie is a TV show that follows the main character John Nolan as he discovers his passion for police working at the ripe age of 45, representing Age. As Nolan enter the police force as a rookie shown by his doubt due to his older age, facing hazing, and often getting the worst tasks from the Watch Commander. The mise en scene of the rookies long sleeved shirts and worse styled hair and outfits make it appear as though they are incoming highschoolers while all the other police officers are senior in high school, asserting how much Nolan stands out, as if he has been held back a few years and should be a senior. Nonetheless he proves himself with his ability to talk to people and bring them down from stressful moments seen in intense moments of dialogue, where Nolan uses a clam tone and talks to them like an understanding friend instead of a demanding police officer. Furthermore, despite his age he tries to do everything he can to keep up with his younger rookie friends, seen in his many choreographed fighting and shooting scenes, that are characterized by the quick cuts, from medium shots to close ups, asserting the high tension of the moments. Additionally, the large amount of two shots and three shots show how Nolan is getting closer to his TO and fellow rookies, establishing that despite his setbacks, he is learning how to be a good police officer and getting closer to his fellow officers, making a place for himself at Midwelsher (the police station).
