Aspects of Identity in Media
This scene is a clip from a TV show called School Spirit, and this scene is a representation of age.
The first indicator of age is the setting, showing the characters in a school area shown by the large amount of teenagers and flags, that students do the pledge of allegiance to every morning. The way the characters are dressed, such as Wally being dressed as a jock, and a girl passing dressed as a cheerleader show that characters we are about to be introduced to are also students, who are talking in the middle of the hallway. In the dialogue of Wally introducing himself to Maddie, he uses words like "class of '84" and "senior year Homecoming game" when explaining how he died, these key words assert that they appear to be the age of a teenager, and give him the title of a jock which is a common character scene throughout highschool films. As the conversation goes on, it is clear that Maddie needs to solve a mystery, which is a common theme in highschool shows. Additionally, the cuts between Maddie looking somewhere to the side, and to two students having an in depth conversation, suggests drama between the two groups, which is a common occurrence in the life of a teenager. In the dialogue, Wally lists things he has and does not have since he died, referencing a locker, shoulder pads and deodorant, reinforcing his jock stereotype. The scene then cuts to a flashback of when Maddie was most likely alive, showing her having slight problems with a boy she is assumingly going out with, shown in the dialogue, when he says, he can't make it to an event he had previously said he would go to. The relationship between them seems to be affectionate, as Maddie calls the boy pretty, relationship problems are common in highschool films. Additionally, the mystery that was shown from before is reintroduced when the assumed love interest steals Maddie's phone without her looking, and Maddie seeming to have a problem with a lady who hit the curb stats heading to school. The scene then cuts back to present time making the sense of mystery stay inside the viewer and the dialogue to show Maddie has figured something out through her flashback, when in the dialogue she wonders why she no longer has her necklace. The mystery feeds into the highschool detective/mystery trope seen in films, as well as the common highschool problems shown in the scene.
