My group choose the sub genre of Tragic romance for our genre project. When deciding the genre, we were stuck between tragic romance and horror, but ultimately choose tragic romance due to the familiarity of it, and the ability to find classic films in this genre. Additionally, the classic films were commonly known stories of Romeo and Juliet, and the Titanic, which allowed us to already have well formed ideas on the subject.
We created an outline of our project before we started researching, allowing us to have a format of what we needed to start researching. In our research we found the definition of Tragic romance varies from website to website, thus we came up with an overall definition. We also researched the beginning history of the genre as well as the current history to show how the genre had changed over time. And lastly we researched the main features of tragic romance, and connected them to the video's we believed were classic films in the tragic romance genre.
When we choose our classic film we had already known we were going to do Titanic and Romeo Juliet, this caused us to struggle on finding our last classic film. In the end we choose the notebook because one of my teammates knew the film very well, and though t didn't end with one of the lovers dying, the female lead did end up with Alzheimer's, making the plot still have a sad ending.
The Titanic
The Titanic is a classic film because it depicts the well known star-crossed lovers romance with one of the main characters being poor and the other being wealthy showing a class difference. When they finally overcome their class difference their boat is tragically hit by an iceberg causing Romeo to die from the freezing water him and Juliet were stranded in. This film gained popularity because it was based off of a real life event that occurred, allowing people to connect more with the story.
The Notebook
The Notebook is a classic film because it modernizes the tragic romance genre as it shows more recent struggles teenagers of this time go through. In the story Noah and Allie both have to leave their budding teenage romance behind to live their lives. Later in their lives they meet up and rekindle their love and grow old when Allie gets Alzheimer's, causing her to forget a lot of their love story, making this the tragic ending. This film is so classic because of the heart wrenching ending and the multiple emotional scenes that people can relate to, also making it very popular with people in the 2000's.
Romeo and Juliet
Romeo and Juliet is a classic film because it is an old, widely known film that people of varying ages are familiar with. Romeo and Juliet is and adaption from the Shakespearean play of Romeo and Juliet created in 1597, and has been adapted many times to explain the genre of tragic romance.
